Turkish club Trabzonspor are hoping to challenge for the Super Lig title next season, and they are turning to a familiar face to lead their attack — Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu.

The last time Trabzonspor won the league was in 2022, when Nigerian forward Anthony Nwakaeme played a key role, scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists. Since then, the club have struggled, finishing 6th, 3rd, and 7th in the last three seasons, while Galatasaray have dominated.

But now, the Black Sea Storm are aiming for a fresh start.

Onuachu to the Rescue?

Onuachu previously played for Trabzonspor during the 2023/24 season, joining from Southampton on loan. He impressed greatly, scoring 15 goals and adding 4 assists in just 21 matches. One of his goals was even nominated for the prestigious FIFA Puskás Award.

Although the club wanted to keep him permanently after that brilliant season, they could not agree a fee with Southampton at the time.

However, things have changed. Southampton were recently relegated from the English Premier League, and Onuachu now has just one year left on his contract. As a result, his market value has dropped to around €6 million, and Trabzonspor are now in a strong position to sign him.

Deal Almost Done

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Trabzonspor are close to finalising the transfer. Onuachu is expected to sign a three-year deal, returning to the club where he previously enjoyed success.

Can He Lead Them to the Title?

Signing Onuachu would be a big boost for Trabzonspor, especially after last season’s disappointing 7th-place finish. He has already proven that he can score goals in Turkey, and his arrival would signal the club’s intent to challenge giants like Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas.

With more strong signings this summer, Trabzonspor could be serious contenders in the Super Lig title race again — just like in the Nwakaeme era.
