Mansfield have signed goalkeeper, Liam Roberts on a free transfer following his departure from Millwall.

Roberts announced his decision to depart Millwall on Monday (9 June) after just one season at The Den and has now dropped down to League One to sign for Mansfield.

Mansfield boss, Nigel Clough is delighted to welcome Roberts who he believes is the ideal new first-choice goalkeeper following the decision to release Christy Pym – who had made 42 appearances this season.

“We needed a first-choice goalkeeper and we think Liam fits the bill perfectly. He’s played against us over the years and we’ve been very impressed by him.

“He has Championship experience as well as a lot of experience in League One. He’s at a good age and we’re very pleased to have him as our number one.”

Roberts began his career at Walsall where he made 149 appearances across League One and League Two, amidst a loan at Chester in 2016-17 season in the National League.

He then moved to Northampton in 2021-22 season before he spent two seasons at Middlesbrough, where he made just five appearances in 22-23 season before he spent the following campaign on loan at Barnsley for whom he made 40 appearances in all competitions.
