The UK has been named as the sole bidder to host 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Less than a month ago, England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales announced a joint bid to host the major tournament with full support of UK Government.
FIFA President, Gianni Infantino has today (3 April) confirmed that the UK were the sole bidder to officially declare their interest for hosting rights to the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup,
“Today I can confirm as part of the bidding process that we received one bid for 2031 and one valid bid for 2035,” commented Infantino at the UEFA congress in Belgrade, Serbia.
“The 2031 bid is the United States of America and potentially some other Concacaf members and the 2035 bid is from Europe and the home nations.
“So the path is there for the Women’s World Cup in 2031 and 2035 to take place in some great nations and further boost the women’s football movement.”
South Africa plus a joint bid from Morocco, Portugal and Spain were also expected for either 2031 or 2035 editions but failed to officially materialise, with USA now expected to be named as hosts for the 2031 tournament.
FA CEO, Mark Bullingham said that the home nations “… are honoured to be the sole bidder for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035.”
England previously hosted the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 1966 which they won on home soil and have since hosted UEFA Women’s Euros in 2005 & 22, famously winning the latter tournament in a memorable final against Germany which went to extra-time.
“Hosting England’s first FIFA World Cup since 1966, along with our home nations partners, will be very special. The hard work starts now, to put together the best possible bid by the end of the year.”
The UK will now put together an official bid which must be submitted to FIFA later this year, with official confirmation of tournament hosts expected to come in Spring 2026.
