Several Tottenham Hotspur stars have come out in public support for sacked manager, Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham yesterday (6 June) despite having led them to this season’s UEFA Europa League title with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final, amidst a 17th-placed Premier League finish.
The disastrous league finish also meant that they finished lowest of the seven London top-flight teams and only 13 points above Leicester City, who were relegated alongside Ipswich and Southampton.
Players however were quick to come out and defend Postecoglou amidst the controversial nature of the decision to sack him, as captain, Son Heung-min took to Instagram to praise his now former boss for trusting him as captain and showing strong belief in the squad.
Defender, Kevin Danso had only joined Spurs on loan for the second half of the season from Lens before he joined permanently on 31 May, but he praised Postecoglou for delivering a “special” achievement in the Europa League title.
Fellow defender, Pedro Porro thanked Postecoglou for “mentoring” him and showing defiance in face of media scrutiny with loyal defence of the squad, especially in a tough campaign which saw him provide “one of the greatest moments in the club’s history.”
Mickey van de Ven had been a key part of Postecoglou’s first-choice defensive selection and the Dutch defender was thankful for his belief amidst “ups and downs” of this season.
Attacking midfielder, Lucas Bergvall reflected on the Europa League’s title success meaning as he thanked Postecoglou for his work to deliver a trophy and create valuable memories for the club and fans alike.
Pape Matar Sarr had enjoyed his best season under Postecoglou with six goals and in an Instagram post, he vowed to be “grateful” for having become “a better player” under his watch.
Striker, Dominic Solanke had only spent one season at Spurs but the 27-year-old was sad to see Postecoglou depart, as he thanked the Greek-Australian for the conversation prior to his move last summer.
