18-year-old Mirra Andreeva, the seventh seed at Wimbledon, is through to the second round after a 6-3, 6-3 win over Egypt’s Mayar Sherif on Tuesday. Despite a nervous start, the Russian teenager quickly found her rhythm and is now the youngest woman left in the tournament.
Andreeva, who made headlines in 2023 by reaching the fourth round on her Wimbledon debut at just 16, was put under early pressure by Sherif on a hot and humid Court 3. She lost the first two games, showing some nerves, but soon broke back when Sherif hit a backhand wide.
Both players exchanged breaks in a tough baseline battle, but Andreeva took control with a strong backhand to lead 4-3. She broke again and sealed the first set with another sharp backhand, growing in confidence as the match went on.
In the second set, Andreeva got frustrated after missing a break point and hit her thigh with her racket. But she didn’t let it affect her for long—she broke Sherif’s serve again to go 3-1 up and stayed in control to finish the match comfortably.
Andreeva is coached by former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez and is seen as a future Grand Slam winner by many in the tennis world. She will next face Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, ranked 63rd, for a place in the third round.
