Rob Van Dam isn’t here for the disrespect—especially when it comes to the memory of his late friend, Sabu.
On his 1 of a Kind podcast, RVD addressed a rude comment he saw online regarding the GoFundMe set up for Sabu’s funeral expenses. Someone questioned why Sabu’s family didn’t have the money to cover the costs themselves, which didn’t sit well with the former WWE and ECW Champion.
“There was a comment on YouTube I saw where someone was like, ‘How could Sabu’s family not have 10K for a funeral or whatever it was?’ You know, I shouldn’t say it like that. Maybe it’s an honest question, but it came across real negative… it was kind of, you know, like dude, that’s stupid.”
RVD explained that the GoFundMe wasn’t about inability—it was about giving people the opportunity to contribute and show their respect for someone who gave everything to pro wrestling.
“A lot of people feel honored to be able to contribute… I mean, you know, a lot of times I’ll be at the bar and a fan says, ‘Hey man, can I pay for your next drink?’ I say, ‘Oh, you don’t have to do that,’ and they say, ‘No, I’d be honored.’ That’s what this is like.”
He also gave background on Sabu’s previous crowdfunding experiences, saying the late legend was reluctant at first because of pride, but eventually gave in because the need was real.
“He didn’t want to do it. It was embarrassing. But finally, you know, he decided to go ahead and do it, and he was really broke and needed the money this time.”
Thanks to the fans, the goal was reached, and more people have continued to contribute. RVD hopes those funds will go toward preserving Sabu’s legacy through a memorial site.
Rob made it clear—this was never about a lack of support. It was about giving fans a way to be part of Sabu’s story one final time.
