Manchester City have signed midfielder, Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for £48m on a five-year contract.
Reijnders’ move to Man City comes just three months after he signed a new five-year contract at AC Milan until 2030, but he has now opted to join City on the same-length contract after a £48m initial fee was agreed between both clubs.
The fee however could rise to £54.8m if easily-achievable add-on clauses are met, but if City meet a tougher set of add-on then the total fee is expected to reach £59m.
The 26 year-old has now left AC Milan after he netted 19 goals in 104 appearances, during which he helped the team win the 2024 Supercoppa Italiana.
Reijnders is “ecstatic” to complete his move to City and play Premier League football which has seen plenty of top Dutch players over the decades.
“City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities. Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles, and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years.
“It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League. This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it’s an inspiration to follow in their footsteps.
“I am really looking forward to getting going, meeting the other players and showing the Manchester City fans what I can do.”
The Dutch midfielder believes that being coached by Pep Guardiola is “a great chance for me,” to be able “to develop myself as a midfielder – to be an even more complete midfielder.
City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana added that Reijnders will bring additional quality to the midfield following Kevin De Bruyne’s exit.
“Tijjani adds extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield and working with Pep and our coaches will only see him go from strength to strength.”
Reijnders began his senior career at PEC Zwolle and quickly secured a move to AZ Alkmaar in 2017, where he scored 19 goals in 92 appearances for their reserve team – during which he made 27 first-team appearances.
The start of 2021-22 season saw the midfielder step up full time to the first-team squad and he went on to score 13 goals in 101 appearances across two seasons, before AC Milan swooped for him in July 2023.
