Turkish club Gaziantep FK have started talks with the 28-year-old Super Eagles star, Henry Onyekuru who is currently a free agent after leaving Saudi club Al Fayha. The move would mark a return to a league where Onyekuru enjoyed some of his best form, especially during his time with Galatasaray.
Injuries Cut Short Al Fayha Stay
Onyekuru joined Al Fayha in 2023 for over €3 million and had a promising start — scoring 10 goals and adding three assists in 31 league games. However, injuries heavily disrupted his second season, limiting him to just four appearances and 147 minutes of football last campaign.
Turkish Clubs Want Him Back
Despite his recent struggles, Onyekuru is still well-regarded in Turkey. He had three successful loan spells at Galatasaray, where he won a league title and became the most prolific Nigerian in the club’s history, before Victor Osimhen surpassed his record.
Now, Gaziantep FK have made early contact with the winger about a possible return. No deal has been agreed yet, but discussions are ongoing.
Sources close to Onyekuru say he is in no rush to sign, as he weighs up his options both in Turkey and abroad.
Other Offers on the Table
Onyekuru was previously in talks with İstanbul Başakşehir and Beşiktaş, but those negotiations reportedly failed due to wage disagreements. Even former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, now at Beşiktaş, is said to be a fan of the player.
Meanwhile, clubs in the UAE and two more teams from Saudi Arabia have shown strong interest as well.
What’s Next?
Now that Onyekuru is officially a free agent, he is in full control of his future. A decision about his next club is expected soon, with Gaziantep FK hoping to sign him before the new Süper Lig season begins.
Nigerian fans will remember Onyekuru for his role in helping the Super Eagles win bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Whether he returns to a familiar home in Turkey or takes on a new challenge, this next move could be key to reviving his career.
