Former Akwa United defender Denis Nya has reportedly parted ways with Zesco United after failing to agree terms on a new contract, making him a free agent ahead of the 2025/26 season.
According to multiple sources, the 28-year-old centre-back, widely regarded as one of the most consistent performers in the Zambian Super League, has already sent emotional farewell message to the club’s fans.
Top Performer Bows Out
Nya enjoyed a standout 2024/25 season in Zambia, where he was named Zesco United’s Most Consistent Player and Fans’ Player of the Year. His commanding performances helped the club finish second in the league, just behind champions Power Dynamos and winning the ABSA Cup title In May.
However, after contract renewal talks broke down, both parties have reportedly agreed to part ways with Zesco in talks with another Nigerian defender Ayodeji Bamidele from Shooting Stars.
NPFL Return or PSL Switch?
Sources close to the player reveal that chances of a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is slim but possible, but several top clubs in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) have already expressed strong interest in signing the experienced defender.
Nya, a former Golden Eaglets player, remains a sought-after figure due to his leadership, strength at the back, and experience across African football.
Denis Nya began his football career in 2011 with Canaan United, under the guidance of late Super Eagles legend John Okon Ene. He represented Cross River State at the Lagos 2012 National Sports Festival, winning a silver medal.
He went on to play for Ekiti United, Lobi Stars, and Akwa United, where he enjoyed his biggest local success — winning the NPFL title in 2021 and starring in the CAF Confederation Cup.
During his time with Akwa United, Nya was known for scoring in big games, including goals against Enyimba, Rangers, and Niger Tornadoes, and earning Player of the Month awards.
What’s Next?
While the defender continues to keep fit with other holidaying Uyo Professionals, his next move is highly anticipated. With interest from both Nigeria, Zambia and South Africa, the experienced defender is expected to make a decision soon.
