Defender, Millie Bright has withdrawn from contention for England’s squad at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
Bright had withdrawn from England’s recent Nations League games against Portugal and Spain for mental health reasons, but manager – Sarina Wiegman had hoped that the defender would return for the Euros.
The 31-year-old however has now decided to withdraw from the squad in order to recover fully from a historic campaign, which saw Chelsea go unbeaten domestically all season with a treble – which saw them win Women’s Super League, FA Cup and League Cup titles.
“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Bright shared on Instagram as she explained that she believes that the nation deserves a squad fully committed on both mental and physical levels.
“Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour. My pride and ego tells me to go but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now I’m not able to give 100% mentally or physically.
“As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my team mates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future in the game and most importantly the team.”
Bright is the latest household name to confirm their absence after Mary Earps and Fran Kirby recently announced their international retirements. meaning that only 11 of the matchday squad for England’s 2022 Women’s Euro Final triumph are set to be selected for their title defence.
Wiegman will name her squad at 2pm BST on Thursday 5 June.
