The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, has sacked the management teams of all four government-funded football clubs in the state. This announcement came after the end of the 2024/25 Nigeria Football League season.
The affected clubs are:
* Akwa United FC
* Dakkada FC
* Ibom Angels FC
* Ibom Youth FC
During a meeting in Uyo with representatives of the clubs, Elder Bassey said the sack takes effect immediately. He also ordered the chairmen and secretaries of the clubs to hand over all documents and reports to the Ministry of Sports within two weeks.
According to the Commissioner, the decision is part of efforts to restructure and improve sports in the state under Governor Umo Eno’s “Arise Agenda”. He added that new management teams will be announced soon to begin preparations for the next football season.
Elder Bassey thanked the outgoing officials for their work and wished them success in their future plans.
Reacting to the news, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom Football Association, Mr Samuel Umoh, said the just-ended season was tough for all the clubs. He praised the Commissioner’s action as a needed step to help the teams do better in future.
Also speaking, coaches and leaders from the four clubs thanked the government for the opportunity to serve and promised to keep supporting football in the state.
