With just two weeks to go, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, is gearing up to host the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, scheduled for July 16–20, 2025. The city is set to welcome 937 athletes and officials from 43 countries across the continent for what promises to be a thrilling showcase of young African talent.
Preparations are in top gear, with organisers working around the clock to ensure a smooth and world-class event. Arrangements for accommodation, transportation, meals, and competition services are being finalised to give participants a memorable experience.
Africa’s top athletics nations—Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt—are all confirmed, alongside other strong competitors like Ghana, Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Senegal, and Uganda.
Host country Nigeria will field the largest delegation, with 132 participants, including 110 athletes (60 men and 50 women) and 22 officials. South Africa follows with 100 representatives, while Ethiopia and Kenya are also sending large contingents of 69 and 67 members respectively. Algeria has confirmed 65 delegates.
This event comes just two months after Abeokuta successfully hosted the 22nd National Sports Festival (Gateway Games 2024), which saw over 15,000 athletes and officials in attendance. The city received praise for its hospitality, efficient organisation, and infrastructure—further boosting its reputation as an emerging hub for international sports.
Organised under the supervision of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), the championship will spotlight Africa’s future track and field stars, combining youthful enthusiasm with continental pride.
With the eyes of the continent turning to Abeokuta once again, the stage is set for a celebration of talent, unity, and the future of African athletics.
