The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will begin on 22 August 2025 and end on 24 May 2026. This was confirmed by NPFL Board Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, during a press briefing at the league’s office in Abuja.
Elegbeleye said the NPFL is working hard to follow a steady football calendar that matches global standards.
Looking back at the recently finished 2024/25 season, he shared some key highlights. Remo Stars won the league with three games left, after beating Nasarawa United on matchday 35 at the Lafia City Stadium.
In total, 380 matches were played, with each of the 20 teams playing 19 home and 19 away games. There were 286 wins, 92 draws, and 552 home goals. Players missed 16 penalties, and referees gave out 1,180 cards (yellow and red combined).
Yusuf Anas was the top goal scorer with 18 goals, including two back-to-back hat-tricks. Rabiu Ali came second with 13 goals.
Elegbeleye also spoke about progress in the league. Over 400 games were shown live on TV this season, helping more fans watch and follow the league. He added that the competition is now fairer for all clubs.
He said the issue of unpaid salaries and bonuses is much better now, thanks to improved financial management by clubs.
For the 2025/26 season, the league winner will get a ₦200 million cash prize—part of plans to make the league more competitive and professional.
